TTE440 VAG 1.8T 5154 UPGRADE TURBOCHARGER

The Turbo Engineers TTE440 is a high-performance upgrade turbocharger developed from a heavily re-engineered OEM BorgWarner K04-064 unit originally designed for the 2.0 TFSI platform (where it is known as the TTE480). It has been specifically optimized for the VAG 1.8T 20V engine to deliver exceptional performance, efficiency, and reliability.

Capable of producing up to 440 PS (depending on fuel type and supporting hardware), the TTE440 begins as a brand-new BorgWarner K04-064 turbocharger. Each unit is fully dismantled and meticulously upgraded by engineering specialists to create a refined hybrid turbo solution tailored for the 1.8T platform. This turbo shares core performance specifications with the acclaimed TTE480, which has demonstrated outputs exceeding 480 PS without water-methanol injection. Installation is straightforward, with no spacer plate required for fitment.

Engineered & Enhanced Design

The TTE440 features a significantly enlarged 2871X TTE billet compressor wheel, selected for its high efficiency and modern aerodynamic design with ultra-thin blades. The compressor housing is precision-machined to optimized tolerances for maximum airflow efficiency, while the intake pipe is ported to ensure a smooth and unrestricted airflow transition.

A CNC-machined TTE silencer-delete modification is also incorporated. This process removes internal baffles from the turbo discharge silencer and replaces them with a straight-through section, reducing restriction, minimizing surge, improving flow characteristics, and enhancing acoustic response.

A critical component behind the turbo’s performance advantage is its oversized 9-blade TTE turbine and shaft assembly. Despite retaining the K04 core architecture, this upgraded turbine significantly reduces back pressure and lowers exhaust gas temperatures compared with stock or clipped K04 turbines commonly used in competing designs.

Motorsport-Grade Bearing System

Each unit is equipped with TTE’s proprietary 360-degree high-performance motorsport journal bearing system, engineered in-house for durability under extreme loads while maintaining rapid transient response and consistent boost delivery.

The turbocharger utilizes an uprated spring-actuated OE actuator fitted with reinforced clamps to ensure reliable operation. Actuator calibration can also be customized to meet specific customer requirements.

Precision Balancing & Quality Assurance

Balance precision is essential to both performance and longevity. Every TTE turbocharger undergoes a rigorous multi-stage balancing process:

  • Individual components are balanced at speeds up to 2,800 RPM in multiple planes.

  • After assembly, the CHRA is dynamically balanced at speeds of up to 250,000 RPM using TTE’s in-house VSR balancing system.

This procedure achieves balance tolerances significantly exceeding OEM standards, improving durability, efficiency, and acoustic refinement. Each turbocharger is supplied with a serial-numbered balance test certificate verifying its calibration.
